Kenyan athlete’s determination to compete remains strong despite accident

Kenyan road race runner Reuben Sikolia is determined to compete in the 2024 Western Regional cross-country championships, despite being involved in a road accident earlier in the week. He was knocked from behind while riding a motorbike in Kakamega town on Friday, February 2, and the other rider drove away immediately after the accident.

Sikolia sustained injuries to his ribs, neck, right thigh, and hands, but was helped by a good samaritan who took him to a nearby hospital. Although he was given permission to return home after receiving medical attention, Sikolia is still keen on competing at the upcoming regional cross-country championships slated for Vihiga County on Saturday, February 10.

He expressed his passion for the sport and his dependency on athletics, stating that he would feel worse if he missed the race and that athletics is the only thing he depends on. Sikolia also mentioned his readiness to switch his citizenship and represent other nations in international championships if the opportunity arises, citing the high number of runners in Kenya and the potential for talent distribution across multiple countries.

His personal best of 1:05.00 was achieved at the 2022 Kakamega Forest run in November 2022, and he also participated in the Kisumu Heart and Cancer run, finishing in 17th position. Additionally, Sikolia urged leaders from the Western region, especially Kakamega County Governor Fernandes Barasa, to invest in all sporting activities and not just focus on football, as there are many talents in the area.
