AFC Leopards confirms new date and venue for Mashemeji Derby

The much-awaited Mashemeji Derby between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards was initially scheduled for 20 April. However, there was confusion among football fans in the country as the venue for the match was also changed from the Machakos Stadium. Initially, the game was supposed to be played at the Nyayo National Stadium or the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on 20 April. However, AFC Leopards confirmed that the derby day has been rescheduled from Saturday, April 20 to Sunday, April 21 and has been returned to Nyayo Stadium.

AFC Leopards announced on their website, “The Derby has been rescheduled from April 20 to April 21 at Nyayo National Stadium.” There were concerns raised by fans over hosting the match in Machakos due to the stadium capacity of 8,000 not being ideal for the clash due to security reasons. Ken Owino, who scored an important goal for Ingwe against his former club Posta Rangers, highlighted that Tomas Trucha’s side is seeking to capitalize on the weekend win to torment Gor. He expressed assurance to fans that they will get value for the money and should turn out in numbers to offer their support in the Mashemeji Derby.

Preparations for the derby started immediately after the Posta Rangers game, and there was an urge for all fans to come and rally behind the team. Johnathan McKinstry’s side will be using the derby to solidify their title ambitions, while Ingwe will be seeking to make a mark and secure a top-six finish. Currently, Gor sits at the summit on 54 points, while Ingwe are 8th with 38 points.

Danny Sserunkuma’s Enduring Legacy Amongst Gor Mahia Fans

The upcoming Mashemeji derby, the second leg of the 23/24 fixture between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopard, is set to take place on Sunday, April 21. This highly anticipated clash is occurring with Gor Mahia currently leading the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) standings with 54 points, while AFC Leopards trail behind with 35 points and a game in hand.

As is customary with this rivalry, an intense and thrilling match is expected. One notable figure in the history of the Mashemeji derby is Danny Sserenkuma, who achieved significant success during his time with Gor Mahia.

Sserenkuma’s contributions to the club included securing several titles and establishing himself as one of the most clinical forwards in the team’s history. Notably, he holds the record for the most goals scored in the Mashemeji derby, tallying six goals during his time with Gor Mahia – a feat he shares with the legendary Sammy ‘Jogoo’ Onyango.

Additionally, he is the only player to have scored a brace in the fixture on two occasions, a testament to his exceptional skill and impact on the derby. Sserenkuma’s prowess is further highlighted by the fact that he is one of the few players to have scored in three consecutive Mashemeji derbies, placing him in the ranks of accomplished players like Abdul Baraza and Meddie Kagere.

His legacy in the fixture solidifies his status as a key figure in the history of the Mashemeji derby.
