Relegation-threatened Kenyan Clubs Overhaul Squads: Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards Bolster Attack

Several clubs in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) made significant moves during the mid-season transfer window, aiming to strengthen their squads for the rest of the season. The transfer window closed on Thursday 8 February 2024, and some clubs, such as Ulinzi Stars, Sofapaka, and KCB, brought in a large number of players in their quest to finish the season strongly. At the same time, league leaders Gor Mahia and former champions Tusker made only a few additions to their star-studded camps, confident in the strength of their existing squads. Gor Mahia currently holds the top spot in the FKFPL standings with 43 points, a comfortable 30 points ahead of bottom-placed Nzoia Sugar, as they head into match week 21.

Several player movements were observed during the transfer window, including the departure of Rogers Mugisha, Lyson Muyonga, and Alvin Ochieng from their respective clubs. Additionally, some high-profile loan deals and transfers, such as Benson Omalla’s collapsed loan move to Algerian club JS Saoura, garnered attention in the league. Sofapaka, in their efforts to avoid the relegation zone, made significant changes, securing the services of 17 new players and releasing 13 others. Nzoia Sugar also made moves by acquiring 11 new players and parting ways with some existing ones.

Overall, the mid-season transfer window saw various clubs making strategic changes in their squads as they aim to achieve their respective goals in the FKFPL.
