Everton’s Premier League points deduction reduced to six

The original ruling, the largest points deduction in Premier League history, placed one of England’s most renowned clubs in 19th place and battling to avoid relegation. However, an independent appeal board has reduced the punishment by four points, propelling Sean Dyche’s team to 15th in the table, securing a five-point lead over the relegation zone with 12 games left.

Everton’s penalty for breaching Premier League financial rules has been reduced from 10 points to six after an appeal, providing a significant boost in their fight against relegation. The hefty punishment was imposed in November after the club was found to have exceeded permitted losses under the league’s profitability and sustainability rules by £19.5 million.

The rules allow clubs to lose a maximum of £105 million over a three-year period. The original ruling placed Everton in 19th place, but the appeal board has reduced the points deduction to six, resulting in a significant uplift for the club.

In their appeal, Everton FC contended the sanction, resulting in the appeal board substituting the original 10-point deduction for six points. The appeal board found that the original commission made “legal errors” and also concluded that the commission did not consider available benchmarks for sanctions, such as English Football League guidelines.

Everton expressed satisfaction with the appeal’s result, which saw a reduction in the original punishment. Additionally, they welcomed the appeal board’s decision to overturn the finding that the club failed to act in utmost good faith.

Despite this positive outcome, the club remains fully committed to cooperating with the Premier League regarding ongoing proceedings. Everton, nine-time English champions and continuously present in the topflight since 1954, have never been relegated from the Premier League.

They only narrowly avoided relegation last season and last won a trophy in 1995. Only two other clubs have received points deductions in Premier League history: Middlesbrough in 1996/97 and Portsmouth in 2010.

Both clubs were unable to avoid relegation.
