Beatrice Chepkoech Overcomes Challenge to Win Unfamiliar Race

Beatrice Chepkoech was in a class of her own at the third Athletics Kenya (AK) track and field meet held at the Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday, January 27, 2024. She surprised most athletics fans when she took part in the 5000m race and comfortably won it with a time of 15:22.06s. Chepkoech led from the start and explained that her main challenge recently has been speed endurance. She stated that she is working on her speed to address this shortcoming. Chepkoech also revealed that she will take part in an indoor event next month in Italy, specifically in the 1500m race, to build on her speed.

Born in Bomet County, Chepkoech has her sights set on winning the elusive 3000m steeplechase Olympic Games gold medal in the 2024 edition, which will be held in Paris, France from July. In her pursuit of this goal, Chepkoech is expected to compete against Kenyan-born athletes Winfred Yavi Mutile and Norah Cheruto Tanui, as well as other top competitors. She aims to surpass the current world record of 8:44.32 that she set at the Monaco Diamond League six years ago.

In addition to Chepkoech, Kenya’s 3000m steeplechase team for the Paris Olympic Games is expected to include other talented runners such as Faith Cherotich and Jackline Chepkoech. These athletes will join Chepkoech in representing Kenya and vying for top honors in the prestigious event.

Beatrice Chepkoech Shares Her Primary Goal for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games

Beatrice Chepkoech, the one-time Diamond League winner, has set her sights on winning an Olympic Games medal as her main target for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Born in Bomet County in Kenya’s Rift Valley region, Chepkoech is known for setting the 3000m steeplechase world record at the 2018 Monaco Diamond League meeting. Despite this achievement, she is yet to win an Olympic medal.

She went on to secure Kenya a gold medal at the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar, setting a championship record time of 8:57.84. Chepkoech expressed her determination to bring glory to Kenya, stating that her aim now is to secure an Olympic medal.

The 2024 Olympic Games will be hosted by France between Friday, July 26 and Sunday, August 11. Chepkoech, who is likely to face tough competition from in-form runners like Winfred Yavi, aims to give her best performance despite struggling with a hamstring injury last season. She emphasized that her focus is on beating the best, rather than targeting a specific opponent.

Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai is the defending Olympic champion in the steeplechase event, having achieved success in Tokyo.
