Kelvin Kiptum, the late marathon world record holder, tragically passed away along with his long-term coach Gervais Hakizimana in an accident on the Eldoret-Kaptagat Road. This news has left the athletic world in shock.
Sharon Lokedi, a friend and training mate of Kiptum, expressed deep sorrow over his demise, remembering him as a joyful and supportive person. She shared that Kiptum’s training mates and those who interacted with him in Kaptagat will dearly miss him.
Lokedi, who gained recognition after winning the 2022 New York City Marathon, trained alongside Kiptum and other athletes such as Caroline Chepkwony, Edward Cheserek, and Eunice Chebichi. The training camp was overseen by coaches Nicholas Chemogos and Nahashon Kibon.
It was revealed that Kiptum had requested a photo be taken with the coaches and drivers who assisted during training sessions as a gesture of gratitude. Little did they know it would be their last photo together.
The loss of Kiptum, who had shown great promise in road running and had broken the marathon record in just his third race, has deeply impacted the athletic community. His infectious spirit and dedication to his sport will be dearly missed.
