Kenyan Man Emerges Victorious in Lagos City Marathon After Several Unsuccessful Attempts


Kenyan runner Bernard Sang emerged victorious in the 2024 Lagos City Marathon. With a time of 2:16.49, he led the Kenyan runners to a clean podium sweep. This win comes after several unsuccessful attempts, demonstrating Sang’s hard work and persistence. Silas Cheprot and Godfrey Birger followed closely, crossing the finish line in 2:16.54 and 2:17.43, respectively.

This marked Sang’s third attempt in the World Athletics Gold Label Marathon, having finished 9th in 2020 and third last year. For their brave performance, Cheprot and Birger will receive $40,000 and $30,000, respectively. In the women’s category, Ethiopia’s Chala Kebene secured the top prize in unfavorable weather conditions. Despite a personal best of 2:26.39, she clocked a slow time of 2:41.01 to emerge victorious.

Ruti Aga from Ethiopia and Sharon Cherop from Kenya followed closely, with times of 2:41.41 and 2:42.00, respectively. Finally, Ethiopians Bedatu Badane, Nigist Desta, and Jebesa Fikadu secured the top three positions, clocking times of 2:27.21, 2:27.51, and 2:28.43, respectively. Overall, it was a successful event with strong performances from both Kenyan and Ethiopian runners.
