Paul Were, a Kenyan international who has played for Tusker and AFC Leopards locally as well as several teams in South Africa, Rwanda, and Greece is set to join Mathare United. He was part of Kenya’s squad at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. Former Harambee Stars winger Were has expressed his commitment to help Mathare United regain its place in the top tier Football Kenya Federation Premier League after completing his switch to the Slum Boys on Thursday morning. The club emphasized Were’s experience and the potential impact it can have on their bid to return to the Premier League.
Were’s speed and versatility were highlighted by the club, stating that his experience at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and recent attachment to Rayon Sport of Rwanda will be an invaluable addition to their squad. Expressing his enthusiasm about returning to Mathare after more than ten years, Were declared his intention to contribute to the team’s success. He expressed his determination to score as much as possible and take on any role that will help the team secure promotion. While Were had initially anticipated a move back to Europe, he indicated that the opportunity to play for Mathare United and assist the team in securing promotion was a compelling reason for him to join the club rather than remaining a free agent.
