Kenya’s sprinting ace Ferdinand Omanyala made a strong statement by smashing the meeting record at the Elite Indoor Track Miramas Meeting in France. Competing in his first international race in 2024, he clocked 6.52 seconds in the 60-metre final, setting a new national record and outdoing his previous time of 6.54s. Omanyala will travel to Glasgow, Scotland for the World Indoor Games and is expected to represent Kenya in the 2024 World Athletics relays championship in Nassau, Bahamas in May. Omanyala set the new record after participating in events organized by Athletics Kenya, including a third track and field meet and a race at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.
He will also represent Kenya in the individual races at the World Athletics relays championship. Mark Otieno, who returned from a doping suspension, and Tyson Juma failed to advance in their heats. Otieno finished fifth in Heat 4 with a 6.78s run, while Juma set a new personal best of 6.85s but did not make it to the final.
