Tough day for Kenyans at Rotterdam Marathon as Kelvin Kiptum takes the spotlight

Abdi Nageeye triumphed at the 2024 Rotterdam Marathon, claiming his fifth victory in the event. The race saw a solemn moment of silence and the wearing of black ribbons to honor the late world record holder Kelvin Kiptum. Ethiopian athlete Ashete Bekere and Somalian-born Dutch runner Abdi Nageeye emerged as the winners in the women’s and men’s categories, respectively.

Nageeye set a Dutch national record with a winning time of 2:04:45. Kenyan runners faced challenges, with only a few managing to secure top positions, despite their strong presence in the competition. In the men’s category, Nageeye’s remarkable performance secured the title, with three Kenyan men finishing within the top 10.

Meanwhile, in the women’s category, Bekere claimed the title, followed by Kenyan runners Viola Kibiwott and Selly Chepyego Kaptich. Additionally, a tribute was paid to the late Kelvin Kiptum, with a special trophy presented to his wife, Asenath Cheruto, in recognition of her husband’s planned endeavors before his tragic passing. This marathon, held in the Netherlands, garnered attention for its impressive displays of athleticism and the poignant acknowledgment of a revered athlete’s untimely departure.
