A much-anticipated tennis event is set to take place in Nairobi, with 12 countries already confirming their participation. Kenya, which finished third in the 2023 edition, was chosen to host the event after a competitive bidding process that saw them win over Burundi. The Billie Jean King Cup Committee endorsed Kenya’s bid, expressing confidence that Tennis Kenya’s team would deliver an excellent event and provide players and visitors with a world-class experience.
The participating countries are Botswana, Burundi, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Tunisia, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. New entrants for the 2024 edition include South Africa, which was relegated from Euro/Africa Group II, and Madagascar, which was promoted from Group IV. The tournament will take place at the tennis courts in Upper Hill Nairobi, starting from June 10, 2024.
Tennis Kenya expressed excitement about hosting the event, highlighting it as an opportunity to showcase the country’s hospitality, tourism, and potential for the sport of tennis. They also called for sponsorship from private organizations. The organization emphasized that the event will feature some of the best women’s tennis teams in Africa.
Local tennis players are expected to use the tournament as an opportunity to improve their skills. Kenya’s squad for the upcoming event includes Angella Okutoyi, her sister Roselida Asumwa, Alicia Owegi, and Cynthia Cheruto, among others. In the 2023 edition, Kenya finished third, as Morocco emerged as champions after defeating Tunisia in an epic final battle in Nairobi, securing promotion to Euro/Africa Group II.
