Unhappy former football player Samuel Eto’o has accused the players of the Cameroon national team of lacking patriotism. In a leaked speech that has gone viral, Eto’o expressed his disappointment with the performance of the Indomitable Lions in the ongoing 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, hosted by Ivory Coast. Cameroon drew 1-1 with Guinea in their first match and were then defeated 3-1 by Senegal. Eto’o specifically criticized the players for not giving their all for their country and for playing too cautiously. He praised the dedication of Manga Onguene, who played through injury for his country, and expressed his belief that players should prioritize their country over money. Eto’o admitted that it was a mistake to include certain players in the squad for the tournament and stated that there will be changes made after the AFCON. He suggested implementing a patriotism test for young Cameroonian players before they can join the national team. Despite his criticisms, Eto’o wished the current team success in their next match against Gambia. During his own playing career, Eto’o helped the Cameroon national team win two AFCON titles and a gold medal at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. The Indomitable Lions have one final group match against Gambia and could still advance to the next round if they win convincingly and Senegal defeats Guinea by a wide margin.
