Shujaa and Lionesses, the Kenyan rugby teams, have both advanced to the semifinals of the main cup at the 2024 HSBC Dubai Challenger Series. The Lionesses were the first to secure a spot in the semis, defeating Czechia Republic with a 22-12 scoreline. They will now face Argentina in their quest for a place in the finals of the first leg of the series.
Meanwhile, the men’s team, Shujaa, produced an impressive performance to narrowly defeat Japan 21-19 in their quarterfinals match. Under the guidance of coach Kevin Wambua, Shujaa’s tries came from Nygel Amaitsa, Samwel Asati, and Patrick Odongo. Odongo, who has been exceptional in Dubai, redeemed himself by scoring the winning try for Kenya. Despite a late try from Japan, it was not enough to deny Kenya a spot in the semifinals.
Both teams had a slow start to their respective matches. The Lionesses allowed Czechia to score the first try, but they quickly bounced back with a try of their own, thanks to Naomi Amuguni, following excellent play from captain Grace Okulu. In the second half, the Lionesses conceded another try before regaining control and ultimately securing the victory.
The semifinals will take place from Sunday onwards, with the Lionesses competing against Argentina and Shujaa facing Uruguay. It promises to be an exciting stage of the tournament for both Kenyan teams as they strive to reach the final and prove their strength in the Dubai Challenger Series.
