Gallant Okutoyi, the 19-year-old tennis player from Kenya, has advanced to the semifinals of the W35 Naples tournament in the United States. In a tightly contested quarterfinal match, Okutoyi defeated Layne Sleeth from Canada with a score of 6-3, 2-6, 6-2. The match took place at the Emilio Sanchez Academy in Florida. Okutoyi started strong with a win in the first set, but Sleeth fought back to take the second set. In the deciding set, Okutoyi regained her form and convincingly won the match. She is now set to face American player Allie Kiick in the semifinals.
The exact time for the match against Kiick is yet to be determined by the organizers. Later in the day, Okutoyi, along with her American partner Carolyn Ansari, competed in the doubles category but unfortunately lost to Mayuka Aikawa and Hsu Chieh-Yu from Taiwan and Japan respectively. Aikawa and Chieh-Yu won the match in straight sets with a score of 7-5, 6-3. Aikawa and Chieh-Yu will now face Leonie Kung from Switzerland and Marie Benoit from Belgium in the doubles final.
The W35 Naples tournament has a total prize money of $25,000 and will conclude on Sunday, January 14.
