Kenya’s tennis sensation Angella Okutoyi is set to compete in the W35 Naples tournament in Florida, USA. The 19-year-old kicked off her campaign with a straight set 6-2, 6-1 victory over Canadian player Louise Kwong. This impressive win has propelled Okutoyi to the second round where she is expected to face Taiwan international Chieh-Yu Hsu. The match is scheduled for Tuesday evening at 7:30 PM.
In addition to the singles category, Okutoyi will also participate in the doubles category at the tournament. Her partner in the doubles event will be Ansari. They will be facing the duo of Kayla Cross from Canada and Sofia Sewing from the United States. The exact time for this fixture is yet to be confirmed by the organizers.
If Okutoyi emerges as the winner in the singles category, she stands to earn a prize money of $25,000. This victory would be a significant accomplishment as Okutoyi started 2023 without a rank but finished the year in positions 586 and 610 in the singles and doubles categories respectively. Her final match of 2023 was against German opponent Lena Papadakis, which Okutoyi won 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 at the Nairobi Club.
The W35 Naples tournament will conclude on Sunday, January 14, and Okutoyi is determined to make her mark in both the singles and doubles events.
